Six things to solve in design so a product looks good and can be mass-produced<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Handling these at the design stage means fewer changes after tooling and a more predictable schedule.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Wall thickness and ribs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Keep walls as uniform as possible; big differences between neighboring sections cause sink marks and warpage. Where strength is needed, add ribs instead of thickening the whole wall. Ribs are usually 50%\u201360% of the main wall thickness with a radius at the base, which keeps sink marks off cosmetic surfaces. Exact values are set during the DFM review based on the material and part size.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Snap fits, screw bosses and assembly order<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Snap fits need the right interference and room to flex, so parts go together, come apart and stay tight. Screw bosses are placed according to load and how often the product will be opened; where it will be opened repeatedly, we use heat-set inserts. The assembly sequence is planned during design to avoid parts interfering and to make work easier on the assembly line.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Draft and parting lines<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Side walls need enough draft, and textured surfaces need more draft than smooth ones, to prevent drag marks and ejector stress marks. Parting lines, witness lines and gates go where they won't be seen, and no ejector pin marks are left on cosmetic surfaces. Where an undercut can be designed out, we do it; removing a slide or lifter also lowers mold cost.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Materials and finishes<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Choose the material first, based on strength, heat resistance and flame retardancy, then the color and texture. Each finish places its own demands on the design: high-gloss surfaces must avoid weld lines, silk screening needs a flat print area, pad printing handles curves and small areas, and conductive coating needs a defined spray zone.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Space for electronics<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Electronics space is planned with the electronics engineer during mechanical design. The PCB, battery, buttons, connectors, lighting and sensors get placement and routing space, with assembly clearance and locating features so nothing interferes or rattles after assembly. Buttons need the right travel and feel, and connectors must line up with the openings in the housing.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Water sealing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Waterproof products, such as electric toothbrushes, need seal grooves in the structure or two-shot overmolding to seal them, and the sealing at buttons and ports is designed at the same time. Waterproofing is finally verified by testing prototypes and mold trial samples.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n

The DFM checks cover uniform walls with ribs instead of thick sections, enough draft on side walls, parting lines and gates kept off cosmetic surfaces, snap fits and screw bosses designed around the assembly sequence, and space reserved for electronics and seals. A 3D-printed prototype then checks appearance, fit and assembly, so problems are fixed on the drawing before the mold is built.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\n<\/details>\n
