Plastic Surface Finishing: Robotic Painting, Pad and Screen Printing, UV Printing and Laser Marking

Hongqing finishes molded parts on the same site where they are molded: 6 robotic painting lines, 30+ pad printers (including a six-color rotary pad printer) and 7+ automatic screen printers, plus UV printing, laser marking, conductive coating and heat-staked inserts. Plating is not done in-house; when needed it is outsourced and disclosed at the quotation stage.

Choosing a finish

Which surface finish suits your part

One part often combines several processes, for example painting, then a screen-printed logo, then a laser-marked serial number; our engineers recommend the combination in the quote based on your cosmetic requirements and volume.

01

Full-surface color

Robotic spray painting

For full-color housings and panels in matte, gloss or soft-touch paint; add logos with screen or pad printing.

02

Flat-surface printing

Screen printing

For logos, text and scales on flat or regular curved surfaces, with crisp, consistent results; switch to pad printing for strong curves or very small areas.

03

Curved-surface printing

Pad printing

For curved, recessed or raised surfaces and small areas such as buttons, with multi-color registration; large single-color graphics suit screen printing better.

04

Multi-color graphics

UV printing

For multi-color gradients and small custom batches with no screens needed; screen printing costs less for high-volume single-color marks.

05

Permanent marking

Laser marking

For wear-proof logos, serial numbers and QR codes that never peel; use printing when you need color.

06

Functional coating

Conductive coating

EMI shielding and anti-static coating for housings, common on electronics and telecom enclosures.

Color and appearance

How color and appearance are approved and kept consistent

Every finish is signed off on a sample before production, and every batch is compared with that sample.

01

Sampling

Samples matched to your color reference

We make samples to your color plaque, physical sample or finish requirements; once you sign off, that sample is the production standard.

02

First article

First article checked every batch

Each batch starts with a first article compared with the signed-off sample for color, gloss, print position and sharpness before production continues.

03

Shipping

Outgoing inspection to standard

Appearance is inspected before shipment per GB/T 2828.1 (ISO 2859-1) AQL or your standard; if you have a color tolerance, it goes into the inspection standard before ordering.

Screen printing or pad printing: which should I choose, and does Hongqing do both?

Hongqing does both, with 7+ automatic screen printers and 30+ pad printers, including a six-color rotary pad printer. The surface decides: logos, text and scales on flat or regular curved surfaces are screen printed for crisp, consistent results, while curved, recessed or raised surfaces, buttons and small areas are pad printed, because the silicone pad conforms to the curve and can register several colors. Many parts use both, such as a screen-printed front panel with pad-printed side buttons. We set the method in the quote based on your drawing and cosmetic requirements, and send samples for your sign-off first.

What paint finishes are available, and how is color approved?

Hongqing runs 6 robotic painting lines for matte, gloss and soft-touch finishes, and robotic spraying gives a more even coat and better batch-to-batch consistency. We match color to your plaque, sample or finish requirements and make samples; once you sign off, that sample is the production standard. Each batch starts with a first article compared against it for color, gloss and appearance before full painting. Logos or text are usually added after painting by screen printing, pad printing or laser marking. If you have a color tolerance, tell us before ordering and we will write it into the inspection standard.

How does Hongqing handle electronic housings that need EMI shielding?

Hongqing applies conductive coating in-house, on the same site as its 6 robotic painting lines, for EMI shielding and anti-static protection on electronic housings such as telecom enclosures, controller housings and other products with circuit boards. The conductive coat usually goes on the inside of the housing while the cosmetic surface is painted or left in its molded color, and both steps happen in our plant. Shielded areas, coating boundaries and assembly contact points are confirmed with you during DFM review and sampling; certification testing of shielding performance, such as EMC, must be done by an accredited third-party lab.

Laser marking or printing: which lasts longer?

Hongqing does all 4 marking methods in-house: laser marking, screen printing, pad printing and UV printing. Laser marking is the most durable, because the laser forms the mark in the part surface itself, so it cannot peel or rub off; it suits logos, serial numbers, QR codes and frequently touched buttons. Printing offers full color for logos and graphics, and its durability depends on the ink and surface. Laser marking a painted part reveals the base color to form the symbol, which is common for backlit buttons. We recommend the method in the quote based on use conditions, cosmetic requirements and volume.
