Choosing a press
Matching tonnage and press type to your part
These are the typical matches. The exact press depends on projected area, wall thickness, material and mold design; once we have your 3D files, our engineers state it in the DFM review.
80T–300T
Precision small parts and small to mid-size housings
Buttons, electric toothbrush housings, timer faceplates, lighting parts, connectors and similar. Presses with robotic part removal suit small parts with tight dimensional and cosmetic requirements.
300T–1300T
Medium to large housings and structural parts
Appliance housings, pet product housings such as automatic litter boxes, automotive parts and industrial enclosures. 40+ presses above 300T, up to 1300T, running molds up to 1.5 m.
7 two-shot presses
Two-shot and soft-touch overmolding
Handles, buttons, grips and seals with soft material over a rigid base. Both materials are molded in one tool, which removes an assembly step and gives a stronger bond.
5 vertical presses
Insert molding and metal overmolding
Threaded inserts, metal parts and terminals molded into the plastic in one shot, for features that conduct, carry load or are taken apart repeatedly. Inserts are placed in the mold before injection, so their position stays consistent.
Materials
Common injection molding materials and typical uses
We choose materials based on strength, heat resistance, toughness, appearance and cost. Our engineers can recommend one, or we buy the brand and grade you specify.
ABS
Easy to mold and takes paint and printing well; used for appliance housings, panels and buttons
PC
Clear, impact-resistant and heat-resistant; used for lamp covers, clear lids and electronics housings
PC/ABS
Balances strength and moldability, available flame-retardant; used for electrical products, chargers and smart device housings
PP
Light, chemical-resistant and suits living hinges; used for appliance internals, containers and caps
PA (nylon)
Strong and wear-resistant, available glass-filled; used for brackets, gears and structural parts
POM
Dimensionally stable and self-lubricating; used for gears, snap fits and moving parts
TPE / TPU
Soft-touch and bonds over rigid plastic; used for handles, seals and grips
Process
From drawings to mass production
Every milestone that needs your approval is confirmed before we move on; the full schedule is given in writing after we review your 3D files.

1
Send drawings or a sample
Send 3D files (STEP, IGS, X_T), 2D drawings or a sample, with material, color, finish and annual volume; we can sign an NDA first.
2
DFM review and quote
Our engineers check wall thickness, draft, undercuts and gate locations, choose the press and mold design, and send a written USD quote and schedule.
3
Tooling
After a 50% tooling deposit, we build the mold in our own tool shop, from 30 days. Molds are usually S136 steel rated for 500,000 shots, and the mold is yours under the contract.
4
T1 trial and sample approval
We trial the mold on our own presses and ship samples for your approval; if anything needs changing, we adjust the mold and trial again (T2, T3…) until the samples pass.
5
Pilot run
A pilot run from 100 pieces checks assembly, appearance and process stability; pilot and production use the same mold, so there is no second tool.
6
Production and shipping
Production from 2,000 pieces ships after four inspection gates. Orders take a 50% deposit with the balance before shipment, on FOB or EXW terms, and we can arrange sea, air or express freight.

How does Hongqing choose the right press tonnage for my part?
Hongqing's engineers pick the press for your part from our 90+ machines (80T–1300T) during the DFM review of your 3D files. They estimate the clamping force from the part's projected area and material, then check mold size, cavity count, wall thickness and flow length. Small parts usually run below 300T; appliance housings, automotive parts and other medium to large parts run on our 40+ presses above 300T, and the 1300T press takes molds up to 1.5 m. The chosen press and mold design are written into the DFM report and quote, and tooling starts only after you approve them.
How does Hongqing prevent sink marks, warpage, flash and weld lines?
Hongqing controls these common molding defects at 3 stages. Before tooling, the DFM review checks for even walls, sensible draft and ribs, and gate and vent locations, so features prone to sink or warpage are fixed in the design. During trials, we tune temperature, pressure, packing and cooling time on our own presses and adjust the mold after T1 and T2 samples. In production, our 20-person QC team checks first articles and patrols the line, measuring key dimensions with 2D vision systems and a CMM. Mass production starts only after you approve the samples and first articles.
When should I choose two-shot molding, and when insert molding?
Hongqing has 7 two-shot presses and 5 vertical presses, and the choice depends on what you are joining: two plastics call for two-shot molding, while plastic around a nut, terminal or metal part calls for insert molding. Two-shot molding suits handles, buttons, grips and seals with soft material over a rigid base; both materials are molded in one tool, so the bond is strong and an assembly step disappears. Insert molding places the insert in the mold before injection, which suits features that conduct, carry load or are taken apart repeatedly. We recommend the process and mold design in the DFM review, based on your part and cost targets.
How does Hongqing keep color and appearance consistent from batch to batch?
Hongqing keeps color and appearance consistent with 3 controls: color matching, first-article approval and in-process inspection. Our in-house color mixing room matches your approved color plaque or sample; every batch starts with a first article compared against your signed-off sample for color, gloss and finish; and QC staff patrol the line, with outgoing inspection per GB/T 2828.1 AQL or your standard. Painted parts go through our 6 robotic painting lines for an even coat. If you have a color tolerance, tell us before ordering and we will write it into the inspection standard.
Send us what you have. We'll map out the route to mass production.
Wherever you are in development, we'll propose the right manufacturing plan, from early design review through tooling and molding to finishing, assembly and shipping, and move your project step by step to mass production.
Helpful to include: sketches, drawings or 3D files, annual volume and target market.
