OEM/ODM Plastic Product Development & Manufacturing
OEM means we build the mold and produce to your drawings; ODM means we design the product from your idea first. Either way, tooling, molding, finishing and assembly happen in our own factory in Dongguan, China. Pilot runs start at 100 pcs and production at 2,000 pcs.
We'll sign an NDA before you send drawings · Or email info@dghongqing.com

Which route
What do you have today? Start from there
Three starting points; tooling, molding and assembly are the same afterwards.
I have 3D files or a sample
OEM: we start with a DFM review
We check manufacturability, build and trial the mold in our toolroom, and start production once you approve the samples. Tooling from 30 days; you own the mold.
See OEM manufacturing →I have a sketch or a reference product
ODM: we start with mechanical design
Our engineers turn your sketch into a production-ready 3D design and verify it with a 3D-printed prototype before tooling. Mechanical design plus one prototype from US$3,000.
See design and engineering →I only have an idea
ODM: we start with product definition
We define functions, target market and cost range, then move to industrial design. Industrial design from US$1,500 per product, with 3 concepts and 2 revision rounds.

How the two routes differ
After tooling the two routes are identical. The difference is what you bring and where our work starts.
OEM · Built to your design
You have the design; we manufacture it
You provide: 3D files (STEP, IGS, X_T, STL) or a sample
We handle: DFM review, tooling, mold trials, molding, finishing, assembly and shipping
To first samples: tooling from 30 days, then trials and sample approval
Upfront cost: the mold, quoted per project after we review your 3D files
Design and mold: the design is already yours; you own the mold and can move it
Best for: brands and buyers with a finished design who need a factory
ODM · Developed from your idea
You have the idea; we design and build it
You provide: an idea, sketch, reference product or brief
We handle: product definition, industrial, mechanical and electronics design, prototypes, plus every OEM step
To first samples: prototypes from 10 days, then tooling from 30 days
Upfront cost: industrial design from US$1,500; mechanical design plus prototype from US$3,000
Design and mold: you own the design IP and the mold, and can move the mold
Best for: brands and start-ups that want one team for development and manufacturing
MOQ is the same for both: pilot runs from 100 pcs and production from 2,000 pcs.
How we work
8 stages from idea to mass production
ODM projects start at step 1; OEM projects come with drawings and start at step 4, tooling. Before each step starts, we tell you what we will do and what you will receive.
01
ODM starts here
Concept evaluation and product definition
We map use cases, target market, competitors and cost range. You receive a feature list, key dimensions and material direction.
02
Product Design & Engineering
Styling, colors and materials, housing split lines, snap fits and assembly, with a moldability check. You receive renderings and 3D CAD.
03
3D-printed / CNC prototypes
We check look, structure, fit and user experience, and fix issues before tooling. Prototypes from 10 days. You receive the prototype and our change list.
04
OEM starts here
Tooling in our own mold shop
After the DFM review we design the mold, usually in S136 steel rated for 500,000 shots. Tooling starts once the 50% mold deposit is paid and takes from 30 days.
05
Mold trial and sample approval
We trial the mold on presses from 80T to 1300T and send samples for your approval of dimensions, appearance and fit. We adjust the mold if needed. You receive samples.
06
Injection molding production
90+ presses, including seven two-shot and five vertical machines. Production orders take a 50% deposit, and lead time is set per product and quantity.
07
Surface finishing
Robotic spray painting, pad and silk screen printing, UV printing, laser marking and conductive coating. Plating is outsourced, and we tell you in advance.
08
Assembly, inspection and shipping
5 assembly lines; four inspection gates, with sampling per GB/T 2828.1 (ISO 2859-1) AQL or your requirements. Balance paid before shipment; FOB or EXW, with sea, air or express available.
Capabilities
R&D, molds, molding, finishing and assembly, all at Hongqing
No need to coordinate a design firm, mold shop, molder, paint shop and assembler separately. If a step such as plating has to be outsourced, we tell you in advance.

What is the difference between OEM and ODM, and which should I choose?
At Hongqing, OEM means we build to your design; ODM means we design the product with you first. With OEM, you provide 3D files or a sample and we tool, mold, finish and assemble; with ODM, you bring an idea or brief and we do the concept, industrial design, mechanical design and prototypes first, then the same tooling and production. If your design is final and you only need a factory, choose OEM; if you don't have drawings yet, or want manufacturability built in from the start, choose ODM. After tooling, both follow the same process, MOQ and mold ownership; ODM simply adds the design and prototype stages.
We have a design, but it can't be molded as is or needs changes. Is that OEM or ODM?
At Hongqing, this case starts with a DFM review and sits between OEM and ODM. Our engineers review your renderings or 3D model, identify features that won't mold well, such as uneven walls, insufficient draft or undercuts that can't release, and propose changes; a mechanical engineer then optimizes the design before prototyping or tooling. You approve every change first, and we keep the original look as far as possible. The effort and cost of the design optimization are stated in the quote.
What information should I prepare for an OEM quote versus an ODM quote?
For an OEM quote, Hongqing needs your design files; for ODM, your idea and targets. For OEM, prepare 3D files (STEP, IGS, X_T or STL), 2D drawings with tolerances and key dimensions, material and color, surface requirements, expected annual volume and first-order quantity. For ODM, prepare the product idea or brief, reference images or competitor links, target market and target price. Either way, you can sign an NDA before sending anything; if something is missing, contact us anyway and we will tell you within one business day what else we need.
How long do OEM and ODM projects take to reach first samples?
Hongqing's OEM projects go straight to tooling with your drawings: tooling takes from 30 days, followed by mold trials and T1 samples for your approval. ODM projects add design and prototype stages before tooling: industrial and mechanical design time depends mostly on how quickly concepts are approved, prototypes take from 10 days, and tooling (from 30 days) starts once the prototype passes. For both, we give you a full schedule after reviewing your information, listing design, prototype, tooling, trial and sample approval milestones.
Are MOQ, payment terms and mold ownership the same for OEM and ODM?
Hongqing's OEM and ODM projects have identical MOQ, payment terms and mold ownership. Pilot runs start at 100 pieces and production at 2,000 pieces; tooling starts after a 50% mold deposit, and production orders take a 50% deposit with the balance before shipment; the mold belongs to the customer, is stated in the contract and can be moved out. The only difference is that ODM adds design fees: industrial design from USD 1,500 per product and mechanical design plus prototype from USD 3,000, with the IP yours once the design fee is paid.
Send us what you have. We'll map out the route to mass production.
Wherever you are in development, we'll propose the right manufacturing plan, from early design review through tooling and molding to finishing, assembly and shipping, and move your project step by step to mass production.
Helpful to include: sketches, drawings or 3D files, annual volume and target market.
